What is a DSP chip? Is it so different from ARM?

DSP (Digital Signal Processing) refers to digital signal processing technology, and DSP chip refers to a chip that can implement digital signal processing technology. The inside of the DSP chip adopts the Harvard structure with separate program and data, has a dedicated hardware multiplier, widely adopts pipeline operation, and provides special DSP instructions, which can be used to quickly realize various digital signal processing algorithms.


DSP chips can be classified in the following three ways.

1. According to basic characteristics; 2. According to the data format; 3. By purpose

Advantages: Large-scale integration, good stability, high precision, programmability, high-speed performance, embeddable interface, and easy integration

Disadvantages: High cost, high-frequency interference power consumption of high-frequency clock, etc.

Is there a big difference between Dsp and ARM?

(1) DSP has outstanding data processing capabilities, with multipliers and dividers, which can complete multiplication instructions and division instructions within one instruction cycle, and has powerful data processing capabilities and high computing capabilities.

(2) ARM's transaction management capabilities are more prominent, and its main advantage is in control, and ARM's instruction architecture is simple, peripheral interfaces are rich, and power consumption is low. This is why ARM is often used in the embedded field.
